3hr at Mosport
With the CASC road racing season winding down, TWOth Autosport with CMP driver Richard L’Abbe found themselves battleing for the GT Challenge GS championship heading in to the classic 3hour endurance race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport). Because of the extended length and unique points system for this event, I was given the position of backing up Mr. L’Abbe as co-driver in the FR500 Mustang race car.
Sharing driving duties for the race, we were on full attack to gain as many points possible at both the 90 minute mid-race point, and end of the 3hour event.
Having not competed in the FR500 with Richard before, and with limited laps at CTMP, my main goal was to pick up speed as quickly as possible. By the end of Friday practice, we had the car set up and I felt strong behind the wheel, running similar times to my seasoned co-driver.
Come race day, I was given the task of qualifying the car as I was able to edge Richard with our fastest time in warmup. 2nd place starting spot was all I could manage, but we were happy to have out-qualified our competition in the championship.
For race strategy, we decided to split the 3hr into three separate fuel stints, which included driver changes at each pit stop. I would start, while Richard would jump in for the middle stint, and hand the car back over to me for the remaining hour of the race. The team strategy was executed perfectly, as we led the first 70 minutes of the race and remained in the top 3 for the entire three hours. Unfortunately for us, our leading competitors in the Paragon Competition Camero were able to run a 1-stop strategy, only requiring a single pit stop for fuel throughout the race.
Although I was able to catch and pass them with only 10 minutes remaining, it was too little too late as they had managed to pull an additional lap lead during our previous pit stop.
2nd place in class, 4th overall.
All in all, it was a great race with plenty of excitement as we fought hard to earn our top 5 overall and 2nd in class finishes. I’d like to thank my co-driver Richard for giving me the opportunity to race with him, as well as the crew at CASC for putting on such a well organized event.
Can’t wait for more as the championship goes down to the wire with one race remaining!
